FanDuel, a sports betting operation located in the United States, has formed a strategic partnership with Switzerland's Sportradar AG. The deal allows FanDuel to stream live sports games within the company's betting app, providing fans with an opportunity to bet on sporting events while they watch.

Although the official announcement was not released until Tuesday, the service actually began last week to bettors in the state of New Jersey, where FanDuel holds the largest share of the sports betting market.

While more common in Europe, the concept of combining live games with a betting app is new to the United States, and FanDuel is first to market with this concept. Part of the reason the technology has been late to catch on in the US is the complex web of broadcast media rights for major sports leagues. The leagues themselves have also been long opposed to any connection with sports betting, although that position has changed over the past year and most currently claim to view it in a positive light on the basis of fan engagement.

The new service remains confined to the state of New Jersey at the moment, due to regulatory restrictions relating to who is allowed to access the FanDuel betting app. The company hopes to make the watch and bet service available in more states as additional sports wagering opportunities become available. Currently ten states have successfully passed legislation to allow legalized sports betting, and additional 29 states have measures on the table to address the topic.

The sports you can currently watch on FanDuel are limited to Tennis and European Soccer, due to media rights deals already in place on the main American sports. The company is working to try to include lower tier sports, such as minor leagues, and speculates that having smaller leagues appear in the apps will double the amount of bets currently being placed on those games.
